Fiji Police Force: A Commitment to Integrity Amid Corruption Claims

The Fiji Police Force maintains that while there may be a few questionable individuals within its ranks, the institution as a whole is not compromised. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized that there is no tolerance for corrupt officers as the force prepares for a “reset.”

In recent statements, Chew disclosed that 28 officers have faced charges for violations of the Illicit Drugs Control Act 2004 over the past three years. He noted that in 2021, five officers were charged with unlawful possession of illicit drugs, followed by 12 in 2022 and 10 in 2023. Additionally, only one officer was charged with unlawful use of illicit drugs in 2022.

Chew reiterated that police officers are frequently reminded that any engagement with drugs is a personal choice, not a reflection of the organization’s stance. He affirmed the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to enforcing a zero-tolerance policy regarding drug involvement among their ranks. Reports of misconduct are thoroughly investigated through proper internal and criminal procedures.

“I reaffirm that the Fiji Police Force is not corrupt,” Chew stated. He acknowledged public perception of widespread misconduct but insisted that this is misleading. The force is actively working to change this perception through internal reforms.

The Acting Commissioner also encouraged the public to report any suspicions regarding police misconduct, assuring them that all claims will be investigated rigorously.
