The Fiji Police MPaisa Taskforce has filed charges against a woman in her late 50s for allegedly obtaining financial gain under false pretenses. The suspect, a Lami resident, is accused of receiving $2,500 from a victim on April 16, 2022.

Investigations revealed that the victim was in online communication with someone she believed was overseas, who claimed that sending the money would result in a gift being sent to her. The victim transferred the funds to an intermediary, who then passed the money on to the accused.

Further inquiries indicated that the intermediary may also have been a victim of the same scam. After realizing something was amiss, the victim attempted to reach out to the online contact but was unsuccessful.

The accused faces a charge of obtaining financial advantage and is scheduled to appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today.
