The Fiji Police Force (FPF) celebrated their first Armed Native Constabulary (ANC) Bowl victory by honoring previous officers who laid the groundwork for their success. This sentiment was expressed by head coach Solomone Nute after their team secured a 45-31 win against the Fiji Corrections Service at the Nasova grounds in Suva.
The trophy was presented to the leaders of both forces by Turaga Na Vunivalu of Bau, Ratu Epenisa Cakobau. This match marked the inaugural face-off between the two security teams and was a part of the FPF’s 150th anniversary celebrations, with plans for it to become an annual event.
Playing on home turf, the Blues showcased a strong lineup featuring experienced players such as former Fijian Drua prop Timoci Sauvoli, Kini Douglas, and Etonia Rokotuisawa. Meanwhile, the Corrections team included notable athletes like former sevens representatives and Olympic gold medallist Josua Vakurinabili, along with Netani Koroisau.
“This is a milestone for us, especially marking 150 years of service for Fiji,” said Nute. He acknowledged the competitive spirit of the Corrections team but emphasized the home advantage of Nasova, stating they fought intensely for their victory. He dedicated the win to former police officers who sacrificed their lives, families, and futures for the service they provide today.
In addition, Nute mentioned he would be observing the Escott Shield Challenge final between Police Blue and Fresh’et Navy before finalizing his selection for the FMF Ratu Sukuna Bowl Challenge. He expressed confidence in his team’s capabilities, having won the Escott Shield for two consecutive years, encouraging them to put in their best effort.
The Escott Shield final is scheduled for Buckhurst Park One at 3pm, preceded by the Koroturaga final between Covenant Red and Nabua White at 1pm. Admission prices are set at $7 for adults and $2 for children under 12 years.
