Fiji is prepared to host the regional policing centres of excellence as part of the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These centres will focus on providing training, research, assistance, best practices, and leadership in various policing domains.
This announcement was made by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during his keynote speech at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 Pacific Policing Event, held in Sagafili Village, Samoa, last week. Mr. Rabuka emphasized the significance of establishing these regional centres, stating, “I’m happy that Fiji can put its hands forward and up, as host for one of these centres.” He also noted that Fiji has the necessary facilities and infrastructure to support this regional initiative.
The main goal of the PPI is to enhance policing collaboration across the Pacific, structured around three core pillars: Regional Centres of Excellence, a Deployable Police Peacekeeping Support Group (PPSG), and a Coordination Hub based in Brisbane. The Prime Minister also highlighted the potential to strengthen Australian support for Fiji’s Black Rock training facility in Nadi, which serves not just military purposes but also functions as a centre for police training and disaster response.
