Fiji is prepared to become the official host for regional policing centres of excellence as part of the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These centres are designed to provide training, support, research, and share best practices in various aspects of policing.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced this commitment while delivering a keynote address at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 Pacific Policing Event held in Sagafili Village, Samoa, last week. He emphasized the significance of establishing these regional centres, stating, “I’m happy that Fiji can put its hands forward and up, as host for one of these centres. We have the required facilities and supporting infrastructure in place, ready to support such regional initiative.”

The objective of the PPI is to harmonize policing frameworks across the Pacific, built on three main pillars: Regional Centres of Excellence, a Deployable Pacific Policing Support Group (PPSG), and a Coordination Hub located in Brisbane. Rabuka also highlighted the potential to enhance Australian support for the Black Rock training facility in Nadi, which serves not only military purposes but is also designated for police and disaster relief training.
