The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has praised the innovative delivery of green hydrogen from New Zealand to Fiji, coinciding with the launch of a dual-fuel hydrogen generator at the Fiji Gas Lautoka Terminal.
FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham highlighted that this initiative, spearheaded by Obayashi Corporation and Halcyon Power in collaboration with Fiji Gas and backed by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, showcases the potential of global partnerships to create significant changes that align economic development with environmental responsibility.
Abraham described the project as a significant advancement in sustainable energy in Fiji and the broader Pacific region, addressing climate change challenges while helping the country achieve its commitments under the Paris Agreement. He emphasized the FCCC’s ongoing dedication to promoting renewable energy and expressed pride in Fiji’s leading role in setting regional sustainability standards.
The project leverages a comprehensive green supply chain, utilizing renewable geothermal energy from New Zealand to generate green hydrogen, which is then transported to Fiji. Upon arrival at the Lautoka Terminal, the hydrogen is carefully released to power a dual-fuel generator capable of using both hydrogen and diesel. This technology significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and supports cleaner energy production.
By diversifying its fuel sources, Fiji enhances its energy security, reducing reliance on imported fuels and paving the way for energy independence amid fluctuating global markets. Abraham also acknowledged the invaluable support from the governments of Japan and New Zealand for their roles in this initiative.
FCCC is optimistic about future developments in sustainable energy and urges additional stakeholders to engage in collaborative efforts aimed at addressing pressing issues such as climate change, energy security, and economic growth. Abraham concluded with an inspiring message about the importance of embracing advanced technologies for a sustainable and prosperous future in Fiji and the Pacific.
This project not only represents a leap towards cleaner energy but also sets a hopeful precedent for innovative solutions in sustainability, encouraging other regions to follow suit.
