The search for a new head coach for the Fiji Pearls has garnered interest, albeit with limited competition. As of November 5, when the position was officially advertised, only two candidates from overseas have applied. Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki confirmed this information and indicated that interviews are set to begin within two weeks, with the aim to make an appointment before January.
Outgoing coach Unaisi Rokoura, whose contract was not renewed, will conclude her role this week as she embarks on her pending leave. Her contract, along with that of the CEO, expired this year; both were initially appointed in late 2021. Sorovaki also noted that interviews for four local applicants vying for the CEO position would proceed as planned.
In a related matter, discussions about a proposed Pacific Series with Netball New Zealand have been re-evaluated. Sorovaki explained that it was deemed appropriate to cancel the event for the time being to focus on securing funding and team preparations, ensuring that Fiji can meet the expectations associated with hosting such a significant series.
This period of transition for the Fiji Pearls presents an opportunity for fresh leadership and direction in the team’s development. With the upcoming appointments of both a head coach and a CEO, there is hope for revitalized strategies and stronger foundations for the future of netball in Fiji. The focus on thoughtful preparation for international competitions suggests a commitment to improving the team’s readiness on the world stage.
