The Fiji Performing Rights Association (FPRA) recently awarded a cheque of $3,600 to Seini Gaunavou-Uluiviti, honoring her late father, composer Yaminiasi Gaunavou, for his influential song “Era Bini Tu.”

FPRA chairman Eremasi Tamanisau shared that the association was contacted by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, which relayed a request from the government of Antigua and Barbuda. They sought permission for a youth orchestra to perform “Era Bini Tu” at the International SIDS (Small Island Developing States) conference.

Tamanisau clarified that while an Australia-based band named Kabani had performed the song, the original composer, the late Yaminiasi Gaunavou, was indeed a member of FPRA. Furthermore, the song is registered with FPRA, which oversees the copyright administration of its members’ creations. Gaunavou had entrusted FPRA with the rights to his works, including “Era Bini Tu.”

The song was featured in a medley performed at the conference for 31 seconds, with a synchronization fee established at $1,000 for every 30 seconds. Consequently, the government of Antigua and Barbuda paid a fee of $2,000, equivalent to roughly FJ$4,403.35. As customary, FPRA retained 10% of this amount for administrative costs before forwarding the remainder to Seini Gaunavou-Uluiviti.

In her remarks, Ms. Gaunavou-Uluiviti expressed her gratitude to FPRA for helping to honor her father’s legacy and ensuring that his music is celebrated on a global scale. She stated, “It’s an honor to receive this cheque on behalf of my late father. Now, the songs are recognized worldwide, and this serves as motivation for young composers out there.”

This act not only underscores the rich cultural heritage of Fiji but also highlights the continued relevance of music as a means of connecting generations and fostering creativity among aspiring artists.

In summary, FPRA’s recognition of Yaminiasi Gaunavou’s work serves as an inspiring testament to the importance of preserving artistic legacies and encouraging new talents in the music industry.
