Fiji’s Parliament will elect a new Prime Minister today, following the summoning of Parliament by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere. The first meeting of Parliament, scheduled for 9:30am, will begin with the swearing-in of new members by the Parliament Secretary General. After the new members have been sworn in, the Parliament will proceed to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker from outside of Parliament.
Once the Speaker has been elected, the Parliament will move on to the process of electing the Prime Minister. The announcement of the Parliament’s election plans came shortly after a Social Democratic Liberal Party management board meeting, during which the party decided to form a government with the People’s Alliance-National Federation Party coalition, rather than the outgoing FijiFirst party.
