Parliament is set to be prorogued from December 16, 2024, until the Opening of Parliament on February 24, 2025. Prorogation marks the official conclusion of a Parliamentary session, adhering to the conventions of a four-year Parliamentary term.
The Speaker has informed the President about the prorogation and the upcoming State Opening of Parliament. Throughout the prorogation period, all Parliamentary business, including sittings and proceedings of Parliamentary Standing Committees related to Bills, Motions, and reports, will be temporarily suspended. However, the Speaker has the authority to address urgent matters that may arise during this time.
The State Opening of the third session of Parliament will take place on February 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with His Excellency the President of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu, officiating the event. This gathering will feature a full military Guard-of-Honour provided by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and will also include the participation of the Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo, along with other esteemed judges.
Following the State Opening, Parliament will reconvene on March 3, 2025, for a two-week session. Despite the prorogation, all operations of the Parliament secretariat will continue as usual unless stated otherwise.
This structured schedule emphasizes the importance of orderly governance while providing lawmakers with an opportunity to reset and prepare for future sessions. The upcoming sessions hold the promise of significant discussions, and the engagement from various branches of government reflects a commitment to transparency and accountability in the legislative process.
