Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Speaker of Parliament and the Turaga Na Tui Cakau, has approved the repatriation of the late Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu’s body. His approval was given during a traditional ceremony at the Parliament Precinct, marking the beginning of the repatriation process.

Ratu Naiqama noted that the ceremony carries immense importance due to Sukanaivalu’s self-sacrifice and the efforts of the Fijian and Papua New Guinean governments to bring his remains home. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, leading the government delegation, requested Ratu Naiqama’s approval to proceed with the repatriation.

Rabuka also paid tribute to the long-standing relationship between Fiji and Papua New Guinea, particularly given that Sukanaivalu is currently buried in Rabaul. Dr Lesi Korovavala, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, briefed Ratu Naiqama on the measures already taken for the repatriation and the ongoing communication between the two governments.

Sukanaivalu, who hails from Yacata in Cakaudrove, is the only Fijian soldier to receive the Victoria Cross; the highest honor for bravery in the face of the enemy among Commonwealth forces. He joined the military through the ‘Vanua’ in 1942.
