Parliament is set to appoint the President of the Republic of Fiji today. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his support for the current President, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, advocating for his re-election. As per the 2013 Constitution, both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition have the authority to nominate one candidate each to the Speaker of Parliament. The Speaker will then present these nominations to Parliament members for a vote. The candidate who secures a majority of votes from the Members of Parliament will be appointed as President. Ratu Katonivere is eligible to serve a second term.
