“Fiji on High Alert: Flash Floods and Strong Winds Loom”

A flash flood alert is currently active for all low-lying and flood-prone areas of Viti Levu, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet).

In their update last night, FijiMet indicated that a low-pressure trough is situated just south of the islands, resulting in overcast conditions across the region. Additionally, another low-pressure trough is on the move, expected to bring a further wave of clouds and rain starting today.

The weather office has issued warnings about potential localized flooding affecting roads, iris crossings, and low-water bridges.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has advised communities in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands, including Moala and the Southern Lau Group, to stay vigilant and follow safety advisories from authorities carefully.

“Given the anticipated heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding in vulnerable areas, the public is urged to avoid crossing or swimming in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where the water level exceeds knee height,” warned the NDMO.

A strong wind warning has also been issued for the land areas of Kadavu and the nearby smaller islands, as well as the waters around Yasawa and Mamanuca, southwest Viti Levu, and Kadavu passage.
