A flash flood alert has been issued for all low-lying areas and those prone to flash floods on Viti Levu, as warned by the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet).
In an update last night, FijiMet indicated that a low-pressure trough is situated just south of the islands, resulting in overcast conditions throughout much of the country.
Another low-pressure trough is approaching, expected to bring additional clouds and rain, which will begin impacting the islands today. The weather agency cautioned about localized flooding on roads, iris crossings, and low water bridges.
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has urged residents in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, as well as those in Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands like Moala and the Southern Lau Group, to remain alert and follow the advisories issued by authorities for their safety.
The NDMO emphasized that, with flash floods anticipated in these vulnerable areas due to the expected heavy rainfall, the public is strongly advised to avoid crossing or swimming in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water depth exceeds knee level.
Additionally, a strong wind warning has been implemented for land areas of Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, as well as the waters of Yasawa and Mamanuca, along with southwest Viti Levu and the Kadavu passage.
