Fiji on Alert: Illicit Drugs Sneaking in with Foreign Goods

The Acting Police Commissioner of Fiji, Juki Fong Chew, has raised concerns about the possibility of foreign goods being combined with illegal substances, including drugs, entering the country. This alert comes in light of an alarming situation where candies laced with methamphetamine, originally brought in from Malaysia, were discovered in New Zealand.

Chew urged authorities to remain vigilant, as these illicit drugs could appear in various products. He emphasized the importance of scrutinizing all foreign items entering Fiji, stating, “We need to be careful of all foreign goods coming into Fiji because people are mixing them with drugs and other substances.”

In a recent interview, Chew noted that the problem is not limited to New Zealand and presents a significant risk to Fiji as well. He emphasized that it is feasible for these dangerous substances to reach Fijian shores, given the close geographical proximity between the two nations.

He highlighted the urgency for local authorities to be aware of this issue, stating, “If we don’t, then innocent individuals could fall victim to this.” Chew reassured the public that police have sufficient resources to handle the situation effectively and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the people of Fiji.

In closing, Chew reiterated that law enforcement has a crucial role in combating drug-related issues within society.
