Fiji-NZ Trade Hits Record High: What’s Fueling the Surge?

Trade between Fiji and New Zealand has reached NZ$1.39 billion (F$1.89 billion) as of the March quarter of this year. This information was presented by David Dewar, New Zealand Trade Commissioner to the Pacific in Fiji, during a Fiji-NZ Business Council cocktail event held in Suva. This marks the first time that trade levels of this magnitude have been achieved, with Fijian exports surpassing NZ$500 million to New Zealand.

During the same period, Fijian exports saw an increase, totaling NZ$523 million (F$712.7 million) in the year leading up to March. Mr. Dewar emphasized the significant contributions of local businesses in driving this trade growth. He expressed his optimism about the figures for the following quarter, expected in the coming weeks, despite the lower travel periods affecting Fiji.

Mr. Dewar highlighted that numerous investment and development projects are on the horizon, which will strengthen collaboration between New Zealand and Fijian companies. He indicated that long-term projections for trade remain positive.

In July, Fiji welcomed 98,332 visitors, including 27,676 New Zealanders, showcasing the growth in tourism and its positive impact on trade. He noted the ongoing opportunities for New Zealand businesses in Fiji, with tourism and travel services being significant contributors to Fijian exports, alongside products like cane sugar, bottled water, fish, wood, and gold.
