The Fiji Police Force is actively investigating separate incidents involving crew members from a foreign airline who were reportedly robbed and sexually assaulted at a nightclub in Nadi during the early hours of yesterday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, expressed his concern for the victims, highlighting the regrettable nature of these incidents. He detailed that one crew member was involved in an alleged theft, while another faced allegations of sexual assault. A suspect, already known to the police regarding the sexual assault claims, has been questioned as part of the investigation.

Gavoka also addressed misinformation circulating among international media outlets, clarifying that claims of the crew being “detained” are inaccurate. “The crew are in good health and are currently staying at a designated hotel for layovers,” he stated. They have been advised by their headquarters to remain within the hotel area to assist with the ongoing investigations and are expected to return home before the week’s end.

Emphasizing the importance of responsible reporting, Gavoka urged international media to avoid sensationalism and ensure their claims are fact-based. He acknowledged that such incidents, while regrettable, can occur anywhere, underscoring that Fiji is not exempt from such challenges. He encouraged tourists to exercise caution, particularly in nightclub areas during late-night hours.

This incident highlights the critical nature of safety in tourist destinations. While it is disheartening to hear of such events, the swift response from local authorities and the assurance given to the victims can foster recovery and reform, reinforcing the safety measures in place for both residents and visitors alike.
