Just five months after the RFNS Puamau ran aground in the Fulaga Passage, its successor, the RFNS Timo, encountered damage during a docking incident on Thursday at the Walu Bay Navy Pier. This vessel, which was brought in from Australia, is another donation from the Australian government to replace the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, valued at $18 million.

The RFNS Timo sustained minor damage to its port-side stern above the waterline while attempting med-mooring operations. Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, explained that the challenge arose from a mix of gusty winds and restricted docking conditions, compounded by limited clearance due to nearby commercial vessels. Furthermore, Commodore Tawake did not dismiss the possibility of unprofessional behavior among some crew members, with reports suggesting that several might have been intoxicated during the incident.

In response to the situation, Commodore Tawake stated that individuals implicated in the alleged misconduct have been detained, and a formal investigation has commenced to clarify the circumstances and identify any inadequacies. Navy engineers conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the vessel shortly after the incident, and repairs are nearing completion, ensuring that the RFNS Timo will soon be operational again.

Additionally, the Navy plans to review its operational protocols and enhance crew training to improve procedures and avert such incidents in the future. Commodore Tawake expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Australian Government under the Vuvale Partnership, emphasizing that this incident underscores the complexities of maritime operations and the necessity for continuous improvement in training and discipline.

Despite these setbacks, he provided reassurance regarding the structural integrity of the vessel, confirming it remains fully operational.

This incident serves as an opportunity for growth within the naval forces, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing safety and professionalism in their operations. With immediate repairs and a strong focus on staff development, the RFNS Timo is poised to return to its crucial role in protecting maritime interests in the region.
