The Republic of Fiji Navy is investigating an incident involving a Goundar Shipping vessel that became stranded at the Cakova Reef near Moala Island. Reports surfaced on social media from a concerned individual whose brother was aboard the ship, urging for assistance for those on board after the vessel ran aground.
A representative from Goundar Shipping reassured family members that they had connected with the captain of the stranded vessel, who confirmed that all passengers and crew members were unharmed. To facilitate a rescue, another ship is set to be deployed to retrieve everyone on board.
Although the specific vessel for the rescue operation has yet to be disclosed, it is believed to be one that was initially planned for a trip to Kadavu later today. Consequently, Goundar Shipping has announced that the Kadavu voyage has been canceled due to this emergency situation.
The rescue boat is anticipated to depart tonight and is expected to reach the stranded vessel by the following day.
This incident highlights the responsiveness and coordination among maritime services in the Fiji region, ensuring the safety of passengers and crew in emergency situations. It also showcases the importance of community vigilance and communication in times of crisis, as seen with the social media outreach that helped bring attention to the situation.
