Fiji National University’s College of Humanities and Education has introduced a new Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Nasinu Campus.
This Certificate Programme is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills across various Martial Arts disciplines. The offerings include Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The program aims to promote a well-rounded approach to Martial Arts training, helping participants improve their physical fitness, mental strength, spiritual well-being, and self-defence skills.
Professor Govinda Lingam, a Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College, emphasized that Martial Arts represents more than physical exercise; it serves as a pathway for personal growth and transformation. He stated, “Today, we are not just launching a programme, but opening the doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth.”
Lingam assured that the programme is inclusive, catering to individuals of varying ages, backgrounds, and physical capabilities. He expressed confidence that Captain Korovou would foster a safe and encouraging environment for students to progress at their own pace while being part of an institution that values mutual respect and growth.
He also highlighted that while technical skills are an important component of the programme, the life lessons derived from Martial Arts are invaluable. “Martial Arts teaches us to maintain calm in adversity, tackle challenges with determination, and embrace a mindset focused on continuous self-improvement,” Lingam affirmed.
Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher at CHE, regarded the initiative as a pivotal moment in the University’s dedication to offering a wide array of educational opportunities that reflect student interests and ambitions. He noted, “This short course programme will equip students with a wide-ranging understanding of various Martial Arts techniques, guided by experienced instructors through intensive training to build both skills and confidence.”
Dr. Alasa encouraged all students to consider registering for this dynamic programme offered by the College of Humanities and Education’s Department of Secondary and Sports Education.
Suraj Singh, Head of the Department for Secondary and Sports Education, pointed out that as society faces increasingly complex issues, the principles and skills taught through Martial Arts are becoming ever more pertinent. Singh remarked, “This programme not only enhances self-defence techniques but also reshapes individuals’ thought processes, aiding them in managing difficult situations with composure, fostering humility and a positive mindset.”
Captain Tevita Korovou, who is leading the program, brings a military background to his role as instructor.
