Captain Tevita Korovou, former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and head of martial arts in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, is now the program instructor for the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Program at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities in Nasinu.

The recently launched Certificate Program aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills across a range of martial arts disciplines, including Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The initiative seeks to promote a holistic approach to martial arts training, aiming to improve participants’ physical fitness, mental resilience, spiritual growth, and self-defense abilities.

At the launch, Chief Guest Professor Govinda Lingam emphasized that martial arts represents more than just a physical activity; it offers a pathway for personal transformation. He stated that the program opens doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, and personal growth, underscoring that martial arts is accessible to everyone, regardless of their age or background.

Professor Lingam expressed confidence that Captain Korovou would provide a safe and supportive environment for students to learn at their own pace and develop essential skills. He highlighted that beyond technical training, the life lessons imparted through martial arts cultivate calmness in adversity, determination in overcoming challenges, and a mindset focused on continuous self-improvement.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher Education, noted that the initiative represents a significant step in the university’s commitment to offering diverse educational opportunities tailored to student interests. He encouraged students to enroll in the comprehensive six-week course, which promises rigorous training and skill development under experienced instructors.

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department of Secondary and Sports Education, emphasized the importance of martial arts in addressing modern societal challenges, pointing out that the values and skills learned through these disciplines are increasingly relevant. He reiterated that martial arts not only teach combat techniques but also foster mental strength and humility in handling difficult situations.
