Fiji National University Launches Free HIV/STI Screening for Students: Get Tested Today!

Fiji National University (FNU) is providing complimentary HIV/AIDS and STI screening clinics for its students, highlighting the institution’s dedication to student wellness and public health.

Dr. Henry Waqa, FNU’s General Practitioner, stated that these screening initiatives are vital to the university’s efforts to promote health and wellness on campus. He emphasized, “While participation in the wellness, HIV, and STI screenings is voluntary, we strongly encourage all students to take part.”

The aim is to detect and prevent illnesses early, particularly in light of a rising number of new HIV cases among young people in Fiji. Early diagnosis can lead to life-saving treatment and improve health outcomes. Right now, free Point of Care Testing (POCT) for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis is available at the Nasinu UniClinic, with plans to extend this service to the Natabua UniClinic soon.

“POC testing provides a unique opportunity for our students, as only a few clinics in Suva offer such services,” Dr. Waqa noted. Students can schedule appointments via email or walk in any weekday from 8 am to 3:30 pm.

The testing process is simple and confidential. Students complete a Voluntary Confidential and Counselling Test (VCCT) form that gathers basic sexual history, which is kept strictly confidential. The testing procedure involves a quick finger prick, with results provided within 15 minutes.

Dr. Waqa stressed the importance of confidentiality, stating, “All tests are conducted in private, and results are only disclosed to the individual being tested.”

If a positive result occurs, FNU offers comprehensive support, including counseling and referrals to The Hub Clinic for further care and treatment. “We reassure students that a positive result is not a death sentence. With appropriate care and medication, individuals can lead long, healthy lives,” Dr. Waqa remarked.

FNU remains committed to reducing the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and STIs through awareness programs and open discussions, fostering a supportive environment for all students.
