Fiji National University Launches Free HIV Screening for Students: Empowering Health and Wellness

Fiji National University (FNU) has initiated free HIV/AIDS and STI screening clinics aimed at enhancing student wellness and promoting public health. Dr. Henry Waqa, the university’s General Practitioner, highlighted that these screenings are an integral part of FNU’s commitment to health on campus.

Dr. Waqa emphasized the importance of participation, stating, “While participation in the wellness, HIV, and STI screenings is voluntary, we strongly encourage all students to take part. The goal is early detection and prevention of illnesses, especially as we are witnessing a rise in new HIV cases among young people in Fiji. Early diagnosis can lead to lifesaving treatment and improved health outcomes.”

Currently, free Point of Care Testing (POCT) for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis is offered at the Nasinu UniClinic, with plans to extend this service to the Natabua UniClinic soon. Dr. Waqa noted, “POC testing provides a rare opportunity for our students, as only a few clinics in Suva provide such services.”

Students can schedule an appointment via email or walk in on weekdays from 8 am to 3:30 pm. The testing process is designed to be straightforward and confidential. Students complete a Voluntary Confidential and Counselling Test (VCCT) form that includes basic sexual history information, all of which remains confidential. The actual test is conducted with a simple finger prick, and results are provided within 15 minutes.

“Maintaining confidentiality is paramount,” Dr. Waqa stated. “All tests are conducted in private, and results are only disclosed to the individual being tested.” Should a student receive a positive result, FNU offers comprehensive support, which includes counseling and referrals to The Hub Clinic for ongoing care and treatment.

Dr. Waqa reassured students, “A positive result is not a death sentence. With proper care and medication, individuals can lead long, healthy lives.” FNU is committed to reducing the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and STIs through awareness campaigns and open dialogue, fostering a supportive environment for all students.
