Fiji MP Voices Heartfelt Concerns Over Controversial Pardoning Decision

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has received numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians expressing their sadness and disappointment regarding the recent decision by the Mercy Commission to pardon former coup leader George Speight. Lal stated that this decision has reopened wounds for those who endured significant losses, whether it involved family members, livelihoods, businesses, or the need to leave the country for safety during those troubled times.

He emphasized that the scars from the events of 2000 are still fresh for many, and he stands in solidarity with those affected, acknowledging the deep impact this period has had on their lives and on the nation.

“As your representative, I must be transparent—while I hear and understand your concerns, this is the reality we must face, and I do not have the power to overturn or contest the decision made. Please know that I truly empathize with your pain, and although I cannot change the past, I will continue to advocate for your voices in our ongoing effort to hold the coalition accountable and ensure transparency for all Fijians,” Lal stated.
