The National Gymnasium in Suva became a gathering place for individuals from diverse backgrounds today, who came together to honor and bid farewell to Ubayd Haider, a revered Fijian Featherweight Boxer commonly referred to as the “Prince of Fiji.”

Haider, born Nathaniel Singh, passed away at Lautoka Hospital on Sunday evening after suffering serious head injuries sustained during a match in Nadi on October 26. His untimely death has left a void in the boxing community and among fans who admired his talent and dedication.

Sports Minister Jese Saukuru was present at the ceremony and delivered a heartfelt eulogy, stating that Fiji mourns the loss of a truly gifted athlete. He emphasized Haider’s role in inspiring the youth of the nation, acknowledging the significant impact he and his brothers had on the younger generation. Saukuru extended the government’s condolences and support to Haider’s family during this difficult time.

Former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy, who knew Haider well, described him as a humble and hardworking individual dedicated to his boxing career. He expressed sadness over the loss of such a promising talent at a young age but urged that Haider’s legacy should continue to inspire others.

Boxing icon Sonny Bill Williams also extended his condolences, having witnessed Haider’s fight just weeks prior. Williams expressed his intention to personally visit the family, affirming that Haider’s impact reverberated through the boxing world.

After the viewing ceremony at the National Gymnasium, Haider’s body was taken to his family home in Laucala Bay, leading to a burial service at Raralevu Cemetery in Nausori. He is survived by his wife, Helen, and their two young sons.

This poignant event serves as a reminder of the vibrant life and potential lost in Ubayd Haider. While the grief felt by his loved ones and supporters is profound, Haider’s legacy as an inspiration to many ensures that his spirit will continue to encourage future generations of athletes in Fiji.

In the face of tragedy, the strength found in community solidarity and remembrance can foster hope and resilience, highlighting the importance of celebrating the lives of those who have touched others in meaningful ways.
