Fiji Mourns a Rugby Legend: Remembering Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese

The rugby community in Fiji is mourning the loss of a legendary figure, Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese (Snr), who was a former national captain, head coach, and administrator. He passed away at the age of 77 at his home in Nausori after a brief illness, as confirmed by his family.

Ratu Ilaitia was not only a prominent figure in sports but also made significant contributions to national development. He served as Minister for Regional Development and Multi-Ethnic Affairs in the interim government in 2000 and later became the Minister for Agriculture, Sugar, and Land Resettlement following the 2001 general elections.

Inducted into the Fiji Rugby Union Hall of Fame, Ratu Ilaitia played a pivotal role in the early days of sevens rugby in Fiji. He captained the Fiji 7s team during their historic victory at the Hong Kong 7s tournament in 1977 and returned in 1980 as a coach to lead them to another Cup final win.

Former teammate Pio Bosco Tikoisuva remembered Ratu Ilaitia fondly, stating that he was a true gentleman both on and off the field. Together, they played for the Fiji team that triumphed over the British Lions in 1977 and were later recognized as FRU Life Members in April 2019.

Tikoisuva highlighted Ratu Ilaitia’s expertise in lineouts and his unwavering sportsmanship, noting, “We’ve lost a respected and humble man.” He reminisced about their tour of England in the 1970s when they defeated the British Barbarians, which also included Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka as part of the team.

Ratu Ilaitia made his international debut in rugby union on June 25, 1969. Sale Sorovaki, the FRU general manager of operations and development, praised Ratu Ilaitia’s intellect and his valuable advice, calling him a “Flying Fijian legend.”

Viliame Takayawa, secretary of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), recognized Ratu Ilaitia as a dedicated supporter of the party and noted his contributions to the Laisenia Qarase government, particularly in land management and development for indigenous peoples.

At the time of his passing, Ratu Ilaitia was the chairman of the Fiji SUN board. He is survived by his wife, Adi Sokoveti Raditora Tuisese, along with children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the near future.
