Fiji Military’s Historic Apology: A Step Towards Healing

At the Sukanaivalu Barracks in Labasa, a new dawn marked a significant moment as the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) formally sought forgiveness from the vanua of Caumatalevu. The Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, accepted the apology on behalf of the community, which pertains to the 2000 coup.

RFMF commander Brigadier-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai highlighted the importance of this reconciliation for the soldiers, their families, and the broader community. He noted, “The reconciliation held in Vanua Levu is crucial, as it involves those soldiers who took part in the takeover of the Sukanaivalu barracks.”

Kalouniwai emphasized that acknowledging their wrongdoings was a significant step, as it recognized the crimes committed against the state and the RFMF. He mentioned that the soldiers, who have faced incarceration for the past five to six years, have come to terms with their actions.

He also pointed out the enduring stigma linked to the soldiers’ actions, which has impacted their reputation within the military and their local communities. Furthermore, Bri-Gen Kalouniwai announced that another reconciliation event is planned in Suva for the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit soldiers, with the largest event scheduled for November.
