The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, addressed the 24th anniversary of the attempted mutiny at Queen Elizabeth Barracks by acknowledging the profound loss experienced during those turbulent events in 2000. During a traditional matanigasau, he emphasized that while the military cannot undo the past, it is committed to mending relationships that were damaged.
Maj-Gen Kalouniwai reflected on the impact of the mutiny, noting that it led to disillusionment among the youth, who began questioning their leaders and seeking guidance. In an earnest appeal, he asked for forgiveness not just from the families of the officers who lost their lives during the incident but also from the broader community hurt by the actions of military leaders at that time.
Among those remembered were several CRW and RFMF soldiers, including Selestino Kalounivale, Jone Davui, Epeneri Bainimoli, Lagani Rokowaqa, and Iowane Waseroma.
In concluding his remarks, Maj-Gen Kalouniwai expressed a hopeful outlook, stating that the RFMF will continue to strive towards regaining the trust of the public and restoring faith in military leadership.
This reflection highlights the importance of accountability and seeking forgiveness in rebuilding trust and community relations. It serves as a reminder that acknowledging past mistakes is a crucial step toward fostering unity and healing.
The hopeful message here is that through sincere acknowledgment of the past and a commitment to rebuilding relationships, a more positive and trustworthy future can be forged for the military and the communities they serve.
