A significant chapter in the history of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) came to a close yesterday as the Reconciliation and Restoration program concluded after nearly a year of efforts. This milestone coincided with the 24th anniversary of the attempted mutiny at the QEB in Nabua, an event that claimed the lives of eight soldiers. Families of the fallen soldiers expressed feelings of relief and a sense of new beginnings for the military.
Salanieta Veilewai, wife of the late Private Temo Veilewai, highlighted the program’s impact on her family, saying it helped ease the pain they have endured for over two decades. “Thank you, RFMF, for constantly remembering us, whose heads of families were lost during the events,” she shared. She expressed happiness and relief when the program was initiated, acknowledging the long-awaited support.
Litiana Davui, wife of the late Jone Davui, spoke about the emotional burden of November, a month filled with painful memories for her and their four children. She offered an apology on behalf of her family for any actions her late husband may have been involved in and extended forgiveness to those connected to his loss.
Mulase Rawaileba, son of the late Lance Corporal Simione Rawaileba, shared his limited memories of his father, primarily a recollection of being picked up from kindergarten. Nevertheless, he sensed the grief carried by older family members and expressed optimism that the RFMF is heading in a positive direction. “A new chapter has begun as a great deal of pain was relieved,” he observed.
This program marks a pivotal moment for the RFMF as it continues to address its past and build a future characterized by healing and reconciliation. The positive responses from the families indicate a collective movement towards closure, fostering a hopeful environment for deeper understanding and peace within the military community.
As the RFMF turns this significant page, it strives for a brighter outlook, prioritizing compassion and remembrance, which can ultimately lead to stronger bonds and a unified future for all involved.
