Fiji Military Forces Prioritize Internal Reconciliation Before National Truth Campaign

The Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is prioritizing internal reconciliation before participating in the broader national Truth and Reconciliation process. During a media briefing at Albert Park in Suva, following a Reconciliation and Restoration March, Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai emphasized his commitment to resolving issues among military personnel, their families, and communities impacted by past coups.

Kalouniwai stated, “We have been invited to be part of the National Truth and Reconciliation process, but I have requested that we first complete our internal reconciliation.” He highlighted the importance of finishing their internal efforts to prevent creating an overwhelming backlog when addressing national reconciliation.

He noted that it is crucial for the RFMF to finalize its reconciliation initiative to cultivate trust and confidence in the organization, enabling the public to appreciate that the military has fully reconciled. This trust, he believes, will encourage individuals to share their experiences during the reconciliation process.

Major Kalouniwai added that focusing on internal reconciliation would also help military personnel gain the confidence needed for the national Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) campaign. He expressed a desire to ensure that officers are prepared to share their stories effectively while understanding the challenges involved in recounting their experiences since 1987.
