Fiji Military Chief Denies Coup Training Abroad: What’s the Truth?

The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, asserted that RFMF officers do not receive training on conducting coups during their international education or training. During an interview on The Lens @177, Kalouniwai responded to inquiries regarding the potential for officers to learn about orchestrating coups while abroad. He emphasized that such instruction does not occur, as the training programs are conducted in democratic nations where the focus is on legitimate security and defense matters.

Kalouniwai highlighted that officers are trained to address security and defense issues relevant to Fiji and are informed about the evolving global landscape concerning these areas. He firmly stated that coups are illegal actions and should never occur, reflecting on Fiji’s experience with three coups in the past, which he noted have had negative consequences for the country.
