Fiji Methodist Church Faces Tough Decision on Same-Sex Marriage Ties

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has yet to determine its stance regarding a partner church that endorses LGBTQ clergy and same-sex marriage. A church community from Nevada, USA, has formally requested that the Methodist Church cut ties with the United Methodist Church (UMC).

Reverend Sekove Veisa, who was part of a delegation that visited Fiji this year, expressed optimism for a different outcome next year. He noted, “In May this year, another meeting was held by the UMC, with same-sex marriage on the agenda, and once again, it was agreed upon.” He pointed out that many individuals have left the UMC following this unanimous decision.

Veisa stated, “We now wish to completely disconnect from the UMC and join the Methodist Church in Fiji conference.” He highlighted a challenge related to a bilateral agreement between the Methodist Church in Fiji and the UMC, which was established prior to the approval of same-sex marriage.

He raised the question of whether a review of the agreement would occur now that same-sex marriage has been sanctioned. “I am pleased that the president of the church has shared his views on the matter,” Veisa added regarding the church’s position.

“We want to sever ties with the UMC in America and request that the MCIF do the same, as they have endorsed same-sex marriage. We are currently evaluating the situation, and a review will take place, with possible outcomes expected next year.”

Jolame Lasawa, general secretary of the MCIF, acknowledged the concerns raised by the American delegation but emphasized the need for caution in light of the original agreement with the UMC.
