Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai stated that the performance level of both teams during the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire the nation and its youth aspiring to represent Fiji. This remark was made at a welcoming ceremony for the men’s and women’s teams on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, with family members and loved ones in attendance.

Tuwai acknowledged that, although the outcome was disappointing for many, the team has the potential to rise again. “First of all, I’d like to thank God for the protection and guidance during the past month of preparation for the Paris campaign and for our safe return,” he said. He expressed gratitude towards coaches, management, and teammates for their commitment to defending the nation’s honor at the Olympic Games.

He extended thanks to families and supporters, saying, “Vinaka Vakalevu to all our mothers, fathers, wives, children, and partners who stood by us.” Tuwai also apologized for not achieving the expected medal color, explaining that the team had fallen short in the final moments of the competition, which made the month-long separation from family particularly challenging.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru commended both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their efforts and expressed gratitude towards the coaches and management for their support throughout the tournament. “Your leadership and expertise have played a crucial role in our team’s success,” he noted, especially highlighting the contributions of Mr. Osea Kolonisau and his family.

Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, stated that the gathering celebrated the extraordinary accomplishments of both teams, which brought great pride to Fiji. He praised the players for their spirit and demonstrated resilience on the world stage. “You’ve not only represented our nation but also inspired young athletes to dream of wearing that iconic jersey,” he remarked.

Mazey expressed immense pride for the silver medal earned at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, recognizing the hard work and dedication of players, coaching staff, and medical teams. He emphasized that the medal signifies countless hours of preparation and sacrifice, encouraging the teams to view the silver as a stepping stone to future achievements.

“As we support our teams moving forward, let this medal inspire even greater accomplishments. Together, we can ensure that Fiji remains a rugby powerhouse, inspiring not just our nation but the entire world,” he said.

He concluded by suggesting that players take some time off to relax and reconnect with their families as they prepare for future challenges.
