Fiji Man Faces Serious Charges in Military Theft Case

A 24-year-old man has been remanded in custody following allegations of stealing a firearm from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. The Nadi Magistrate’s Court will consider his bail application today. The accused, Sitiveni Tavakece, appeared in court yesterday facing two theft charges and one charge of possession of a firearm without a license.

Tavakece is accused of unlawfully taking a 9mm pistol, valued at $1,500, on September 25. He is also alleged to have stolen three souvenir medals from the RFMF. Reports indicate that the state plans to file a third charge against him today. The case has been scheduled for mention at 9:30 a.m., with bail having been denied.
