Fiji Lifts Seasonal Ban on Grouper and Coral Trout: What’s Next for Marine Conservation?

The Ministry of Fisheries and Forests has officially lifted the seasonal ban on Grouper and Coral trout, known locally as Kawakawa and Donu, which was in effect until September 30.

These fish species play a vital role in coastal marine ecosystems and are also important for food sources and economic income. The seasonal ban was implemented to safeguard these fish during their spawning period and to prevent overfishing, which could lead to a significant decline in their population and ultimately threaten the fishery’s sustainability.

Minister Alitia Bainivalu expressed gratitude to the public for their support during the ban, which lasted from June 1 to September 30. She encouraged continued collaboration among the community to manage and protect fisheries and ocean resources effectively.

Following the lifting of the ban, Bainivalu urged the public to practice responsible and sustainable fishing methods.
