Fiji Leads the Way in Youth Empowerment Across the Pacific

Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to youth development in the Pacific region during the South Pacific Youth Senior Government officials meeting held in Nadi. In his keynote address, Phillip Hereniko, the director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, emphasized that this year’s theme, “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific,” highlights the crucial role of young people in shaping the future of the region.

Hereniko noted that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has long been a leader in youth development initiatives, with a commitment that extends beyond policies and programs to become a fundamental part of the national agenda. He pointed out several recent initiatives, including a review of youth development policies and legislation, the formation of the National Youth Council of Fiji, and the launch of The Youth Education Sex App aimed at educating youth about sexual reproductive health services.

He acknowledged the support of UNFPA and UNICEF in these initiatives and stressed the importance of inclusivity in youth development, ensuring that every young person has access to opportunities regardless of their background, gender, or location. Hereniko also noted the success of Youth Festivals and symposiums, which have united young Fijians from various backgrounds to celebrate diversity and express their goals and challenges.

As the Senior Officials Youth Meeting continues, Hereniko expressed Fiji’s desire to build on existing progress, learn from each other’s experiences, and develop innovative strategies that empower the next generation. He emphasized the need for collaboration, the sharing of resources, and leveraging each nation’s unique strengths to foster a Pacific region where all young individuals can realize their full potential.
