The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has applauded the successful shipment of green hydrogen from New Zealand to Fiji, which coincided with the launch of an advanced hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas terminal in Lautoka.
Joel Abraham, the Chief Executive Officer of FCCC, emphasized the project’s significance, which is a collaborative effort between Obayashi Corporation, Halcyon Power, Fiji Gas, and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ). He believes this initiative exemplifies how international partnerships can promote solutions that balance economic growth with environmental conservation.
“This project represents a significant advancement for sustainable energy in Fiji and the Pacific, contributing to the fight against climate change and supporting Fiji’s commitments under the Paris Agreement,” Abraham stated. He reaffirmed FCCC’s ongoing dedication to promoting sustainability through renewable energy adoption and innovation, expressing pride in Fiji’s leadership in setting regional sustainability benchmarks.
The pilot project showcases a comprehensive green supply chain, producing ‘green’ hydrogen using carbon-neutral geothermal energy from New Zealand, which is then shipped to Fiji. Upon arrival at the Lautoka Terminal, the hydrogen is released carefully to power a dual-fuel generator that operates on both hydrogen and diesel, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions while providing cleaner and more efficient energy.
By diversifying energy resources, this hydrogen technology is expected to enhance energy security. The dual-fuel system helps decrease dependency on imported fuels, ultimately saving costs and promoting energy independence amid a volatile global energy market.
Abraham also expressed gratitude to the governments of Japan and New Zealand for their critical contributions. He noted, “We thank the Government of Japan for its visionary support and the Government of New Zealand for its essential role in producing and supplying green hydrogen, which inspires hope for a sustainable future for Fiji and the Pacific.”
FCCC is eager to continue supporting and promoting further innovations in green energy to ensure Fiji remains at the forefront of sustainable development in the Pacific. They also encourage other stakeholders to collaborate on initiatives that address pressing issues such as climate change, energy security, and economic development.
Abraham concluded by highlighting that by adopting cutting-edge technologies, Fiji is charting a path toward a sustainable future where progress and environmental responsibility coexist harmoniously.
This initiative not only positions Fiji as a leader in renewable energy in the Pacific but also serves as a model for other nations striving for sustainable development, fostering a sense of hope and collaboration globally.
