Fiji Leads the Charge in Youth Development for the Pacific

Fiji reaffirmed its commitment to youth development in the Pacific during the South Pacific Youth Senior Government officials meeting held in Nadi. Phillip Hereniko, director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, delivered a keynote address emphasizing this year’s theme, “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific,” which highlights the significance of young people in shaping the region’s future.

Hereniko noted that the Ministry has long led youth development initiatives, stating that their dedication extends beyond mere policies and programs; it is a fundamental value integrated into the national agenda. He highlighted several recent initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry, including a review of youth development policies and laws, the creation of the National Youth Council of Fiji, and the introduction of The Youth Education Sex App, aimed at educating young people about sexual reproductive health services.

He expressed appreciation to UNFPA and UNICEF for their support, stressing the need for inclusivity in youth development to ensure that all young individuals, regardless of their background, gender, or location, receive equal opportunities. Hereniko also pointed out the success of Youth Festivals and symposiums in fostering unity among young Fijians from various backgrounds, allowing them to articulate their aspirations and challenges.

As the Senior Officials Youth Meeting progresses, Hereniko voiced Fiji’s desire to build upon the advancements achieved, learn from one another’s experiences, and formulate innovative strategies that empower the next generation. He underscored the importance of collaboration, resource sharing, and leveraging the unique strengths of each nation to cultivate a Pacific region where every young person can realize their full potential.
