Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, participated in the Tourism Resilience Summit in Sendai, focusing on the future of tourism recovery, sustainability, and resilience within the Asia-Pacific region. Joined by Fiji’s Ambassador to Japan, H.E. Filimone Waqabaca, DPM Gavoka highlighted Fiji’s unwavering commitment to bolstering its tourism sector against various crises, including natural disasters and health emergencies.
In his speech, Gavoka spoke of Fiji’s impressive ability to recover from past challenges such as the SARS epidemic, the Global Financial Crisis, and the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. He pointed out the nation’s strong dedication to sustainability and economic diversification, alongside the importance of public-private partnerships and progressive policies in fostering a robust tourism sector.
The Summit, co-hosted by Japan and UN Tourism, featured a Ministerial Meeting under the leadership of Japan’s Tourism Minister, Hon. Saito Tetsuo. Attendees reached a consensus on the importance of proactive preparedness and adaptive recovery strategies to improve resilience against future disruptions.
