Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi has officially launched its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber, a significant advance in the treatment options available for chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The launch ceremony was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Biman Prasad, who emphasized how this service could help address the pressing issue of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly diabetes, which is the leading cause of premature deaths in Fiji.
Professor Prasad highlighted the alarming fact that one diabetes-related amputation occurs every 12 hours in Fiji, underscoring the urgency for effective treatment options. He stated, “The launch of HBOT is a major step forward in improving health outcomes and reducing the need for amputations.” The newly operational HBOT chamber will be available 24/7, aiming to enhance recovery times for patients and significantly decrease the instances of amputations related to chronic conditions.
This innovative therapy is not only designed for local Fijians but also seeks to attract patients from other Pacific Island countries, positioning Fiji as a regional healthcare leader. Professor Prasad expressed optimism that the introduction of HBOT will foster new collaborations with healthcare providers and enhance medical tourism, contributing to the overall growth of the healthcare sector in Fiji.
Moreover, during the launch event, the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program was introduced, which offers discounts on healthcare for active cane farmers, showcasing a commitment to improving healthcare accessibility for rural communities.
The inauguration of HBOT at PSH is a hopeful development that signifies a proactive approach towards tackling serious health issues in Fiji. By investing in advanced medical technologies and services, the country is paving the way for a healthier future, improving the quality of life for its residents and addressing the challenges posed by chronic diseases.
Overall, the launch of HBOT represents a promising stride toward better health management in Fiji, with potential benefits reaching beyond the local population to neighboring regions.
