A new initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy has been launched in Fiji. The Fiji Gas Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Generator Demonstration Project, a collaboration involving Fiji Gas, Japan’s Obayashi Corporation, and New Zealand’s Halcyon Power, was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka.

Halcyon Power is a joint venture between Tūaropaki Trust of New Zealand and Obayashi Corporation, focused on the production of green hydrogen. The project commenced in February of last year and is set to run until January this year. It is stationed at Veitari in Lautoka and operates on a mix of green hydrogen and diesel, aiming to minimize carbon emissions while ensuring a stable energy supply.

This innovative project will highlight the use of green hydrogen produced from geothermal energy in New Zealand, utilizing it in a dual-fuel generator, the first of its kind in the Pacific region. Although specific financial figures have not been disclosed, it is noted that both the Ministry of Economy and the government of Japan are providing partial funding for the initiative.

Abas Ali, Operations Manager at Fiji Gas, stated that the partnership with Obayashi Corporation is part of an international effort to advance this project. He explained that the dual-fuel generator integrated into the Fiji Gas terminal in Lautoka helps reduce electricity costs associated with the terminal’s operations.

Dr. Kenichi Ando, the managing executive officer of Obayashi Corporation’s green energy division, expressed gratitude towards the Fijian government for their support of the venture. He emphasized the project’s significance as a stepping stone not just for Fiji, but potentially for the global hydrogen market.

Dr. James Ataria, Deputy Chair of Tūaropaki Trust, identified the project as a crucial tool in demonstrating the viability of green hydrogen and its potential role in lowering the carbon footprint of Fiji’s economy and that of the Pacific region. He underscored the importance of environmental preservation and the need to enhance the ecological sustainability of business operations.

This project not only showcases advancements in green technology but also sets a positive example for sustainable energy practices in the Pacific, reflecting a broader commitment to combating climate change and advancing environmental responsibility.

In summary, this project marks an important milestone towards renewable energy in Fiji, promising benefits not only locally but also setting a precedent for future energy initiatives across the Pacific and beyond.
