The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, has launched a Tax Compliance Taskforce aimed at combatting tax evasion and avoidance while bolstering tax compliance in the country. The initiative will be chaired by Nitin Gandhi, a skilled Chartered Accountant and member of the FRCS Board.
This Taskforce is designed to enhance tax revenue collection through collaborative efforts with various agencies and businesses, focusing on rigorous enforcement measures. Its objectives include:
– Evaluating and suggesting enhancements to existing legislation and processes.
– Revisiting current protocols to develop more effective frameworks for investigating and prosecuting undisclosed income and financial non-compliance.
– Working alongside key agencies to tackle tax evasion and related financial crimes.
– Utilizing evidence-driven information from diverse sources to bolster investigations.
– Implementing strategies to safeguard revenue and ensure adherence to legal standards.
– Upholding strict data privacy and security protocols.
The Taskforce comprises notable figures, including Jitoko Tikolevu, former CEO of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority; Rusiate Tudravu, former acting Commissioner of Police; anti-corruption expert Avaneesh Anand Raman; and risk management specialist Pramesh Sharma. Appointed for a preliminary period of 12 months, the Taskforce aims to ensure precise tax collection aligned with FRCS procedures.
Udit Singh, the FRCS CEO, emphasized that the Taskforce will work cooperatively with existing agencies, such as the Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption, and the Fiji Police Force, instead of replacing their roles. It will also coordinate with international partners like Australia and New Zealand. The formation of a structured framework and guidelines for the Taskforce is underway, including a forthcoming memorandum of understanding with other enforcement bodies.
This initiative marks a significant step towards greater fiscal responsibility in Fiji. By bringing together expertise from various sectors, the Taskforce can not only tighten compliance but also foster trust in the tax system, which ultimately benefits all citizens through improved public services and infrastructure.
In summary, the establishment of the Tax Compliance Taskforce reflects a proactive approach to taxation in Fiji, aiming to enhance compliance, enforce legal standards, and promote cooperation among agencies for a more equitable financial environment.
