In a unified effort to enhance road safety and decrease fatalities on Fiji’s roads, the Land Transport Authority (LTA), together with the Fiji Police Force and key partners, will kick off National Road Safety Week tomorrow.
The event’s launch is set to occur during the Miss Hibiscus Festival in Suva. This week-long awareness initiative will take place daily at the Suva Foreshore from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, aiming to promote responsible behavior among drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
LTA Acting Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the significance of following road safety regulations as a vital measure in saving lives. He noted that road fatalities continue to be a pressing issue, with 38 deaths reported as of August 27, 2024, a decrease from 62 during the same period last year. This campaign serves as a reminder that maintaining safety on Fiji’s roads is a collective responsibility.
“Key messages during National Road Safety Week focus on promoting responsible driving behavior. This includes adhering to speed limits, steering clear of distractions like mobile phones, and not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Rokosawa stated.
He encouraged drivers to consistently wear seatbelts, ensure their vehicles are safe for the road, and be considerate of vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. In terms of passenger responsibilities, Rokosawa highlighted the importance of wearing seatbelts and motivating drivers to follow traffic regulations. Passengers are also urged to minimize distractions for the driver, ensuring their behavior does not compromise safety.
Pedestrians, regarded as some of the most vulnerable road users, are advised to utilize designated crossing zones, remain aware when walking near roadways, and avoid jaywalking. They are also encouraged to wear bright clothing, particularly at night, and to make eye contact with drivers before crossing streets to enhance their safety.
Throughout the week, the Suva Foreshore will host engaging activities to promote road safety awareness. LTA Manager Road Safety Watilala Fonu announced that road safety quizzes and giveaways would be held to test knowledge and reward participants for understanding crucial safety practices.
A poetry reading event on September 2 will focus on the theme of National Road Safety Week, with participants sharing creative takes on the importance of road safety. Additionally, an art exhibition showcasing submissions from schools across the nation will celebrate young artists while reinforcing the road safety message through their artwork, which was created as part of a competition for the event.
The National Road Safety Week activities will also coincide with the Vodafone Friendly North Festival, which will run from September 2 to 6 at Subrail Park, Labasa, each day from 10 AM to 4 PM. Furthermore, LTA will provide full services after hours at the 2024 Miss Hibiscus Festival from 5 PM to 9 PM and at the Vodafone Friendly North Festival from 5 PM to 8 PM.
