Fiji Launches National Road Safety Week: A Call for Responsible Driving

In a united initiative to enhance road safety and lower the number of fatalities on Fiji’s roads, the Land Transport Authority (LTA), in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and other key stakeholders, will kick off the National Road Safety Week tomorrow. The launch will occur during the Miss Hibiscus Festival in Suva.

This awareness program, taking place daily from 10.30 AM to 11.30 AM at the Suva Foreshore, aims to promote responsible behavior among drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. LTA Acting Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the significance of following road safety measures as essential for saving lives.

Despite a drop in road fatalities—38 deaths reported as of August 27, 2024, compared to 62 during the same period last year—Rokosawa highlighted the ongoing need for a shared commitment to road safety. He stated, “One of the key messages of National Road Safety Week is promoting responsible driver behavior, which includes obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions like mobile phones, and never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

Rokosawa also urged drivers to wear seatbelts consistently, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and remain vigilant regarding vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. For passengers, he stressed the importance of wearing seatbelts and encouraging drivers to follow traffic regulations while reducing distractions to the driver.

Moreover, pedestrians, being among the most vulnerable road users, are advised to use designated crossing points, stay alert near roadways, and refrain from jaywalking. Simple safety measures, such as wearing visible clothing at night and making eye contact with drivers before crossing, are also recommended.

Throughout the week, the Suva Foreshore will be lively with activities aimed at engaging the public in road safety awareness. LTA Manager of Road Safety Watilala Fonu mentioned that quizzes and giveaways would challenge participants’ knowledge and reward their understanding of safety practices.

A poetry reading event is scheduled for September 2, focusing on the theme of National Road Safety Week, where participants will share creative interpretations of road safety’s significance. In addition, an art exhibition featuring contributions from schools nationwide will showcase young artists’ work while reinforcing road safety messages through visual art, created during a dedicated art competition.

Additionally, activities for National Road Safety Week will continue concurrently at the Vodafone Friendly North Festival from September 2-6 at Ground 1, Subrail Park, Labasa, daily from 10 AM to 4 PM. The LTA will also provide full services after hours during the 2024 Miss Hibiscus Festival from 5 PM to 9 PM and at the Vodafone Friendly North Festival from 5 PM to 8 PM.
