Fiji Launches National Road Safety Week: A Call for Responsible Driving

To enhance road safety and minimize fatalities on Fiji’s roads, the Land Transport Authority (LTA), in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and other key stakeholders, is set to launch National Road Safety Week tomorrow.

The event will kick off at the Miss Hibiscus Festival in Suva. This week-long program will take place daily at the Suva Foreshore from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, aiming to promote responsible behavior among drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

LTA Acting Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the initiative’s focus on the importance of following road safety measures as a critical approach to saving lives. With road fatalities currently at 38 as of August 27, 2024, down from 62 during the same period last year, Rokosawa stated that this campaign underscores the shared responsibility for safety on Fiji’s roads.

“One of the central messages of National Road Safety Week is to promote responsible driving behaviors, which include adhering to speed limits, avoiding distractions like mobile phones, and never driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” he stated.

Additionally, drivers are encouraged to consistently wear seatbelts, ensure their vehicles are safe for use, and be considerate of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists.

Rokosawa noted that passengers also have an important role in promoting safety by wearing seatbelts and encouraging drivers to respect traffic regulations. He pointed out that passengers should help minimize distractions that could affect the driver’s focus.

To protect pedestrians, who are among the most vulnerable road users, he urged the use of designated crossing areas, maintaining awareness when navigating roads, and avoiding jaywalking. Simple actions like wearing visible clothing at night and making eye contact with drivers before crossing the street can significantly improve pedestrian safety.

Throughout the week, activities at the Suva Foreshore will aim to engage the public in road safety education. LTA Manager of Road Safety Watilala Fonu highlighted that quizzes and giveaways will be available to test participants’ knowledge and reward them for understanding vital safety measures.

A poetry reading event is scheduled for September 2, where participants will share creative interpretations centered on the theme of National Road Safety Week. Furthermore, an art exhibition will feature works from students across the nation, showcasing their artistic talents while reinforcing road safety messages. The artworks are part of an art competition meant to serve as compelling reminders of the need for prioritizing safety on the roads.

The National Road Safety Week events will also occur concurrently at the Vodafone Friendly North Festival from September 2 to 6 at Ground 1, Subrail Park, Labasa, from 10 AM to 4 PM each day. LTA services will be available after hours at both the Miss Hibiscus Festival from 5 PM to 9 PM and the Vodafone Friendly North Festival from 5 PM to 8 PM.
