Fiji Launches Major Biodiversity Initiative with Global Support

The Cabinet has given the green light for the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) – Early Action Support Project to move forward, with funding assistance from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the GEF serves as the largest multilateral trust fund aimed at helping developing nations invest in environmental initiatives. It supports the execution of key international environmental agreements, which include those related to biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification.

Fiji has obtained this initiative to reassess its key biodiversity priorities according to the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2020 – 2025, aligning them with new biodiversity targets established by the Global Biodiversity Framework.

The project will utilize a comprehensive approach that encompasses both society and government, incorporating an Inter-Ministerial NBSAP dialogue along with consultations that involve crucial stakeholders. This includes government partners, civil societies, NGOs, regional organizations, resource owners, and academic institutions.

The project is slated for completion by February 28, 2025.
