Fiji has taken a significant step towards enhancing its scientific exploration and environmental sustainability with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art research vessel named ‘Yau Dikevi’ in Lami. The Government emphasizes that this vessel represents a crucial investment in advancing oceanic research and safeguarding the nation’s marine resources.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated the launch, highlighting that the vessel is equipped with cutting-edge scientific survey tools. Rabuka described it as a floating laboratory, which he believes will serve as a beacon of hope for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources. He noted the vessel may not be large but is fully capable of performing vital research tasks.

The capabilities of ‘Yau Dikevi’ include conducting marine geology and coastal surveys, mapping the ocean floor, identifying vulnerable coastal areas to aid climate-affected communities, studying tectonic activity, and comprehending the processes that shape the underwater landscape. These endeavors will not only enrich global scientific knowledge but will also enhance Fiji’s capacity to protect its marine environment for future generations.

This initiative is the result of a collaborative effort involving the government and the local shipping industry, particularly Silverstone Pte Ltd. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude towards the Ministry staff for their relentless efforts in making the vessel a reality.

As a symbolic gesture, following its commissioning, RV Yau Dikevi set sail on its maiden voyage to Nukulau. This moment marks a hopeful future for Fiji’s commitment to nurturing a sustainable marine environment, fostering scientific research, and promoting resilience against climate change.

This investment in research and environmental protection reflects the broader global movement towards sustainable practices, inspiring hope for the future of marine conservation and scientific exploration.
