Fijians seeking heart bypass surgeries can now benefit from significant savings by opting for procedures at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH), which has recently launched its cardiac surgery services in Fiji. This development not only provides advanced cardiac care locally but also eliminates the need for expensive overseas travel, which can be prohibitively costly.

Kusum Lata, a 56-year-old resident from Lautoka, made history as PSH’s first patient to undergo open-heart surgery, successfully completing a four-hour operation on Monday. Lata was previously advised to travel to India for the procedure, which would have cost around FJ$54,000. Instead, she was able to receive the same life-saving surgery at PSH for less than a quarter of that expense.

Parvish Kumar, the founder and CEO of PSH, described the launch of local cardiac surgeries as a game-changer in healthcare for both Fiji and the wider Pacific region. “This achievement showcases the commitment and skill of our surgical team, enabling patients to access world-class cardiac care at home, surrounded by their loved ones, and at much lower costs,” Kumar stated.

The surgical team at PSH consists of highly trained professionals from reputable international healthcare institutions, dedicated to maintaining high clinical standards. Kumar emphasized that the successful execution of Fiji’s first open-heart surgery stemmed from 15 months of meticulous planning, investment in state-of-the-art technology, and collaborative efforts among medical teams.

Kumar, who previously lectured at the Fiji School of Medicine, referred to this milestone as a “beacon of hope” for cardiac patients across the Pacific. With a strong emphasis on rigorous pre- and post-operative protocols, PSH aims for a perfect success rate in its program, with Fijian nurses playing an integral role in the care and operations.

“Our Fijian nurses performed admirably, ensuring thorough care during the surgical process,” Kumar expressed, reflecting on the hospital’s pivotal role in enhancing access to cardiac healthcare in Fiji.

In summary, this local initiative positively impacts the healthcare landscape in Fiji, providing essential services while supporting economic savings for patients. It represents a promising shift towards improved medical care at home, fostering hope for many in need of life-saving procedures.

This initiative exemplifies how advancements in local healthcare services can lead to better health outcomes while reducing financial burdens on families and communities.
