Fiji Labour Party Demands FICAC Chief’s Resignation Amid Controversy

The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has demanded the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her role as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry stated that she should step down until the complaints against her concerning abuse of office are resolved by independent and impartial officials.

Chaudhry emphasized that it would be a serious injustice to allow her to lead FICAC while she is under investigation. He noted that she was under arrest and being questioned when the circumstances surrounding her appointment changed unexpectedly.

He also raised concerns about a clear connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung, claiming that while the Attorney-General presents himself as an independent observer, he is actually closely linked to Malimali’s appointment behind the scenes.

Chaudhry mentioned that sources indicated Malimali did not apply for the FICAC commissioner position when it was first advertised in June 2024, but had submitted her application after it was readvertised on July 13. Attempts to reach Malimali for a comment were unsuccessful.
