The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) is demanding the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry stated that her resignation should occur until the allegations against her regarding abuse of office are thoroughly investigated by independent and impartial officials.
Chaudhry emphasized that it would be unjust for Malimali to lead FICAC while she is under investigation. He pointed out that she was arrested and being questioned at the time of her appointment, suggesting that the process was compromised by her premature appointment.
Additionally, Chaudhry raised concerns about the connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung. He argued that while Leung presents himself as an unbiased figure, he is significantly involved in her appointment behind the scenes.
Chaudhry revealed that Malimali was not an applicant when the FICAC commissioner position was first advertised in June 2024 but chose to apply when the position was readvertised on July 13. Malimali was contacted for a statement on the matter but did not respond.
